There is so much innovation happening in sustainable textiles and it is very inspiring. However it isn't picking up at a mainstream level and you may be wondering, why aren't brands using more sustainable materials? Or you maybe you have experienced why firsthand. Here's the roadblocks we see from fashion brands using sustainable materials more regularly. Not commercially available When we set out to create our Sustainable Sourcing Directory, we encountered a lot of nos. No, we aren't commercially available. No, we only work with this one brand on a trial basis, no one else. We quickly experienced the hardships of trying to source sustainable materials. They aren't available. The innovative sustainable textile companies out there are mostly startups which means they are working to grow from concept to mainstream. Here's three sustainable materials that could be game changing for brands, but it's hard to get your hands on them if they aren't ready for commercial use.
Our Sustainable Sourcing Directory will help you avoid time and confusion when looking for materials to source for your brand. You'll have access to this resource forever and as we find new resources that are commercially available, we will update this list and alert you! Too Pricey You can have all the sustainable hopes in the world but if your product is too expensive, it won't sell. And if your product can't sell, you can't stay in business. This is a common problem for sustainable brands since materials are the priciest part of most products and when you are sourcing experimental sustainable materials, that price skyrockets. A great example of this was former ethical luxury brand, Maiyet. This team created some of the most beautiful, ethical, sustainable products on the market but their prices were so high their market wasn't big enough to stay in business. They ultimately pivoted to a retail model. You can still find their store called the Maiyet Collective, a concept shop that features other brands. Sourcing sustainable materials takes patience and perseverance so it's important to stay true to your brand standards and journey throughout the process while being realistic on price.
