The Sustainable Apparel Coalition created the Higg Index to help all of us assess where we are at and the areas in which we can improve. How do you measure up? What’s the Sustainable Apparel Coalition? The Sustainable Apparel Coalition is the apparel, footwear and home textile industry’s foremost alliance for sustainable production. The Coalition’s main focus is on building the Higg Index so all industry participants can understand the environmental and social and labor impacts of making and selling their products and services. There’s still a lot of measurements we have yet to capture in regards to the impact fashion has on the planet. Without a solid understanding of how to measure impact or where we currently are at, it’s impossible to actually track our progress as we aim to improve as a whole. What is The Higg Index? The Higg Index is essentially a self-assessment tool developed by the SAC to empower brands, retailers, and factories of all sizes, at all stages, to measure their impact both environmentally and socially and identify areas of improvement. Why Does it Matter? It’s important to not rely solely on cleaning up factories in order to improve our industry. We all take a part in the progress and this tool allows us to check, as brands and as retailers, where we can improve internally just as much as with external bodies in our supply chain. What Does it Measure? The Higg Index takes quite a deep dive into all possible areas affected by the production, consumption, and disposal of products and the businesses that design them, create them, and sell them. The assessment covers Water Use & Quality, Energy & Emissions, Waste, Chemicals & Toxicity, and Social & Labour. How Can I Take The Higg?
