There are a few email marketing platforms out there so when you launch your fashion brand it's easy to be unsure which platform is best for you. We've used Mailchimp, Hubspot, and now have switched to Flodesk for our email marketing. Each have their merits but here's the reason we made the switch to Flodesk and you might too. How our experience with Mailchimp may be different than yours
We'll first caveat this list with the fact that we were a long time, happy user of Mailchimp for many years. But a couple years ago Mailchimp expanded their product offering, and with seemingly little communication to existing customers, drastically increased their pricing to include these extra features that we, as the long time customer, had not yet decided to opt in for. This put a bad taste in our mouths to continue doing business with them and as we became increasingly frustrated we started looking for other options - and we ultimately landed with Flodesk for our email marketing. Here's why. 1 | No Surprise Pricing Mailchimp: Take a look at Mailchimp's pricing page and their featured Standard plan seems like a great deal, $15/mo for up to 50k contacts - GREAT! However that's not actually true. A quick scroll down to calculate your pricing, you get bumped up after a mere 500 contacts to the plan for 2,500 contacts and suddenly that Standard Plan is $52/mo! WHAT? That isn't responsible communication in our opinion which makes us wary. Flodesk: We signed up through a referral and got locked into a 50% off rate. So instead of $40/mo, we pay $20/mo. That's it. If you want to lock in that same discount, use our referral here. 2 | Forever Pricing - No Matter Your List Size Mailchimp: As you saw from the Mailchimp list size calculator, their pricing is based on how successful you are at growing your list. We don't mind spending for using more of their platform however you are also charged for the amount of unsubscribes and bounced emails you have as well. They are included in your total list size so even if your list is smaller, your unsubscribes may knock you into a higher price bucket than you can afford. Flodesk: Our rate will always be $20/mo no matter how big we grow our list. 3 | Beautiful Templates for Easy Design Mailchimp: If you haven't caught on yet, graphic design and branding takes time and skill. Using Mailchimp we always designed our own emails because the templates Mailchimp provided never felt pretty enough for a fashion company. Flodesk: Similar to a Canva-style graphic design builder. Flodesk offers numerous pre-designed templates and email elements for you to incorporate in your email marketing strategy. We still tweaked our design to make it our own but found that the selection was a more modern, higher fashion designed that we loved. Why Mailchimp may still be ok for you Mailchimp is free for only one list with up to 2,000 contacts (including unsubscribes) so if you are just getting started maybe you find your bearings here first before selecting which paid platform is best for you. We did that and there isn't any shame in it. Mailchimp has built a great product. However, if you are already paying for email marketing or want to have beautiful templates to look more professional from day one, we've been happy with Flodesk and can heartily recommend them. As a small business, you don't have the budget to pay for every platform on the market, so choosing which platforms are the most crucial for your business operations will help you decide where to spend your money.
