All clothing has a "Made in" line on the tag, but how does that help you know that it was made in an ethical factory? Well, it doesn't. This "Made In" label, only indicates the final destination where the pattern pieces were sewn together. There are many garments labeled "Made In New York" when 90% of the construction occurred overseas. So obviously, the tagging system used today needs some work if it's desired outcome is transparency and standards. Here's how it needs to change. Implementing how it's made in labelling
Since location does not determine standards, a labelling system disclosing how the garment was made would be far more productive in increasing the standards in the fashion industry. As a refresher, here are some of the labor standards in an ethical factory. 1 | No child labor 2 | No slave labor 3 | Fair wages 4 | No discrimination 5 | Right to unionize Download our full FREE ethical factory guide to learn the rest and what they mean. Requiring transparency Some brands have already stepped up to be transparent about their supply chain standards. However, most brands are too busy or have not prioritized this change in communication. So to push the industry forward, legislation is often required to increase transparency, just like with the California Consumer Privacy Act, or the European Commission Cookie Policy. This empowers the consumer to make more informed decisions when they shop. We need a USDA Organic stamp of approval There are plenty of certifications when it comes to ethical manufacturing, but the problem is most people don't know what they are. So even if a brand does put the certification on their label, the shopper is not informed to look for it. When the organic food movement became mainstream it was a combination of shopper awareness and the USDA Organic stamp of approval. Fashion needs a similar mark so consumers can quickly and easily make more informed shopping decisions. We are working on that.
